After being awarded a medal of Bravery from the Lieutenant Governor for saving a young woman's life from a deadly house fire, I was left confused as to why I was the person who stepped in while the bystanders that day couldn't even speak up and call 911.  While I was doing something that seemed like the obvious right thing to do - they stood by and did nothing.  I looked for answers and found them in a phenomenon of our human nature called the "Bystander Effect".  Watch or listen to learn more about why good people don't always do the right thing - and more importantly, what we can do about it.

Kris Simpson is an absolute hero.

No like, he’s an actual hero. Last year he saved a family from their burning home in his neighbourhood. He literally went in, through the smoke and fire and found a family that had no escape out of their home.

Kris is also the owner of a gym in my neighbourhood, called Bodies By Design. He is the author of “The All Inclusive Diet”, an international best selling book that gave me a lot of great tips on health and meal prep which is fantastic for me, because I don’t cook and I do not eat well.

Today on the show, we are talking about his twenty one years in business. Yes Twenty One! Kris shares his story about how ‘BBD’ was born and how much persistence had to do with overcoming not only financial challenges, but legal and mental and emotional challenges as well. “Necessity makes us move faster”, says Kris and business is always changing and evolving, so you have to adapt. (This is NOT cliche when its coming from a guy who’s been successful for twenty one years with a gym that nearly never opened.)

Having that in mind, he wants his children to make as many mistakes as possible, because that’s where change happens. We are going to fall down anyway, the question is how much time we are going to spend on the floor.

Being a person who lost everything, and managed to regain it all back and more, he emphasizes how much power comes from healing and how important it is to ask for help. Now that he’s on the other side, he uses his experience to give and help others heal.

Kris is someone I admire and look up to as a business person and as a father. And it helps that he is a physical specimen of near perfection… so yeah there’s that too. Regardless, Kris is someone I’m proud to call friend and I'm proud to have on the show today. And I think you’ll enjoy and resonate with why when you listen.

See full post here: https:krisjsimpson.com/3-biggest-questions-about-life I call him my Spiritual Sensei or someone who has helped me navigate through the most turbulent times of my life which I’m eternally grateful for. We will discuss (not answer) these three questions: 1. Where did we come from? 2. What’s our purpose for being here? 3. Where are we going after here? I don’t think we have any definite answers to these questions as I’ve been asking for the answers most of my life. I can remember as a kid looking up to the stars and asking you first question, where do we come from, and getting an overwhelming feeling of smallness as I imagine the universe couldn’t have an end because it would need to be something on the other side of that end, or a new beginning. Lately, I’ve begun to think more of the last two questions: What is our purpose for being here, and where do we go from here? As I was pondering on this yesterday while I was meditating, I came up with a few words that gave me some clarity to these questions (at this point in my life). I hypothesized that we are all here as human beings to experience more. More, more joy, more heartache, more stumble, and more climbs. More of life (period). What we experience, we learn and grow from, and we could call that some form of enlightenment (don’t be too freaked out about that word lol) And this would all be of no purpose if we didn’t share it, so expressing ourselves in many different ways either through language, art, physically through sports and dance, to even our careers and businesses; essentially any forms of creativity can be seen as an expression. This expression creates change or evolution, and As Charles Darwin once said, it’s not the strongest of the species that survives nor the most intelligent but the one most responsive to change. So if we want to stick around while feeling purposeful, we have to be forever changing or evolving. Sedentariness has been coined the “sitting disease” and “sitting is the new smoking.” See link here--> http://www.krisjsimpson.com/stand-up-desks-can-save-your-life/ We aren’t made for sitting yet we sit on average 60-80% of the day and most of that time is at our desks. The solution is a stand-up desk and here are 5 reasons why Stand Up Desks can save your life. I will share 5 ways a stand-up desk can save your life: 1. Reduce obesity: Extensive research has been done on what James Levine, author of “Move a little, lose a lot,” https://amzn.to/2mHabLG describes as N.E.A.T. (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). You may be surprised by how many more calories you can burn just by sitting less and moving more!! In fact, some studies have shown that you can burn up to 30% more calories only by standing. Now that’s some serious motivation to get a stand-up desk! 2. Reduce heart disease: This is not a new idea, it was first proposed in 1953 where a study of bus conductors who stood all day had half of the risk of heart disease as opposed to those who were seated while driving the bus. 3. Reduce blood sugar: Excessive sedentariness is linked to over a 100% increase in the incidences of type 2 diabetes which is the new pandemic especially in the western society. 4. Less neck, back, hip and knee pain: This is the result I immediately noticed (thankfully) when I switched a few years ago to a stand-up desk. I had tried all types of office chairs, treatment, you name it, but nothing would relieve my chronic joint pain. The stand-up desk worked so well for me that I started recommending it to my lifestyle coaching clients as well. Did you know studies show a 30 % reduction in back pain? It's true! 5. Live a longer life: Many studies have shown a 41% increase of dying earlier for people that are excessively sedentary. If you sit at a desk for 8 hours or more a day, in my opinion, you are overly sedentary and need to get off your butt and move more often. A stand-up desk is a solution which won’t interfere with your work productivity, in fact, many studies have proven it helps with productivity. I guess this is why they call it, “thinking on your feet.” Case and Point: Why do we think we need to sit when we work, is there any evidence that says we work better when we’re sitting vs. standing? As you can see, there’s plenty of evidence to say that excessive sitting is killing us slowly and that a stand-up desk could save your life. Quick disclaimer… I’m a proud parent (of a 12 year old boy and 8 year old girl) but I’m far from “perfect”, rather I strive for progression not perfection. I hope these three parenting tips helps you as much it has helped me! Quick back story… I attended a family retreat with my son organized by Family Board Meetings http://familyboardmeetings.com/ at Powder Mountain in Utah. The objective was to create a tighter bond with my son by spending quality time with him along with other entrepreneurs and their children. As you may know, entrepreneurs and professionals seem to have the most challenges with spending quality time with their children. One of the presenters at the family retreat was Dr. Shefali who is a clinical psychologist, author and international speaker who is regularly featured on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN TV https://drshefali.com/on-oprah/ During the event she asked the children and parents what they needed most from each other. The children, who ranged from 10 years old to 16 years old, all referred to what I now call the 3-P’s of parenting as being what was most important to them (and which many of them felt was lacking from their parents). I was featured as a guest on Global News AM 640 Parenting show https://globalnews.ca/toronto/program/the-parenting-show hosted by Pina Crispo (ironically on Father’s Day) along with my co-guest, lifestyle and travel blogger Angie Campanelli http://www.familytravelguide.ca/ On the show I explained the 3-P’s of Parenting and how to become a progressively better parent: 1. Present: In our western society, time is in short supply, and parenting time is on the decline. With our attempt to keep up (or ahead) in our careers along with balancing our own emotional and physical health, creating quality time for our relationships is no easy task. With all respect, I think parents of past generations may have had it easier in this regard. There was more traditions that allowed for more family time and they were not caught up in the web or what we call social media and digital communication. 2. Patience: With all of the micro decisions we have to make because of the incessant bombardment of social media and digital communication (which we digest with decadence), our emotional and physical energy is taxed much more than in prior generations of parents, therefore our patience is limited as well. To boot, we struggle to keep up with our self-care and health practices which are in place to keep us charged up. The end result is an energy deficit which causes a general lack of patience (while driving and to the factor of 10 when driving with our kids in the car!) By default, I take on the traditional parenting role of setting and maintaining structure for my children. But here’s the thing, when I play with my children I by default become more present and patient! Angie Campanelli added in a bonus “P” which she called PRESSURE. She pointed out that as parents, we feel an enormous amount of pressure to be the best parents, and because of this, sometimes the performance stress has us going in the opposite direction of the 3-P’s. Life Coach & Trainer from Toronto crawls into smoke-filled, burning home, saves woman’s life A bum shoulder couldn’t keep a Vaughan man from rushing into a smoke-filled, burning home to rescue a trapped woman Monday morning. * recording from 105.9 FM http://www.1059theregion.com/ Kris Simpson’s quick thinking resulted in the saving of a young woman’s life, in the opinion of Vaughan fire Chief Larry Bentley. “I believe Kris Simpson’s a hero,” Bentley said Tuesday. “I believe he saved that woman’s life.” Excerpt from the Vaughan Citizen, March 20th, 2018, Tim Kelly https://www.yorkregion.com/news-story/8340392-vaughan-man-crawls-into-smoke-filled-burning-home-saves-woman-s-life/ Simpson, said it all started early Monday when his girlfriend alerted him to the fire next door at 6 Ed Quigg Way in Woodbridge. The personal trainer and life coach, who had shoulder surgery just over a week ago and has his arm in a sling, rushed outside to see what was happening. He quickly discovered that while a number of people were already outside the smoke-filled home, there was still one person trapped inside the burning home on the second floor. Unconcerned about his own safety, Simpson rushed into the home. “It was full of smoke. I’ve never seen anything like that before. It (smoke) was pretty much 10 inches from the floor and all the way up, you couldn’t see through it, but I could hear screaming and it sounded like she was upstairs. “I just rushed in, but I couldn’t get very far because I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t see. I thought, if I go any further here, I won ‘t make it out alive, so, by natural instinct I got myself out of the house and into the front yard again and made sure someone called the fire department,” said Simpson. Simpson then went back into the home for the second time, this time crawling on the floor under the smoke to the foot of the stairs, “so I could breathe,” he said. “I made my way up the stairs to the point that I was talking her down, coaching her down … to the point where I saw the blanket she was holding on to and her foot and I grabbed her and led her out of the house. She was trapped upstairs and couldn’t see and in a panic and just couldn’t get down the stairs,” Simpson said. He said the fire chief told him he was very brave and very heroic but said he doesn’t feel like a hero, “because I did not continue up the stairs the first time.” Simpson said, “Perhaps it wasn’t as brave as those firefighters were when they go up the stairs and bring people down on their backs, but the objective was met in the sense that she got out alive and it was a fire that could have killed the whole family for sure.” He said the woman’s mother told him, “Thank you for saving my daughter’s life.” Simpson said the woman’s face and mouth were black from the smoke when she got out of the home and that she could only breathe because of the blanket she held over her head and covering her mouth. He’s been told she’s now home from hospital and staying at another relative’s house recovering. As for Simpson, Bentley said it’s his plan to have him receive a special citation for bravery from the City of Vaughan at a future date.
